"some Chinese herbal tea, with a fairly icky undertone, but I like the
collaged label, which shows a rickshaw at rest. I overcame my problem
of watercolouring on this paper - the water just beaded up - by using
my Caran d'Ache Neo Color II watersoluble crayons. I'd never really
used them, but here they work well, with just a light wash of water at
the end. They're opaque, like gouache - who knew?
The three
gents at the bottom of the left-hand page - I don't know if you can see
them properly, and I haven't done them justice, but I drew them from a
traditional painting in our room, which shows gods, men, women, animals
- a huge cast of characters in horizontal bands, with gold leafing.
It's quite beautiful. It was only as I was drawing them that I realised
that the original artist had decided that the man in the middle was
well-supported by his companions, and didn't really need to have legs
of his own.
The right-hand page: two leaves from a palm just beyond our verandah; and a lily from the bouquet on the coffee table."
