Necrolysis- Separation or exfoliation of necrotic tissue. (This has more application in the accounts of bodies dug up in the middle ages-- and later-- where witnesses testify to ruddy or "new" skin on the supposed vampiric corpse, which later medical persons denote as being skin slippage, or necrolysis-- a normal occurrence in a decomposing body. Find out more about this in Step 5.)
Necromania- (see necrophilia).
Necrophagous- Feeding on dead flesh.

How to do Gravestone Rubbings

1. Make sure the stone is clean and completely dry.  Tape will not adhere  to a wet stone, and the dampness will make the paper fragile and liable to tear.  Besides ruining any chance of a rubbing, this may cause you to accidentally damage the stone with your rubbing material. 
2. Cut a piece of your paper or other rubbing material to a size slightly larger than the stone. If possible, write any information on or about the stone, inscription, date, location, etc. on the back of the paper before doing the rubbing so you don't smear your rubbing. Or, carry a small notebook, write the information on a page, tear out and roll up with your rubbing.
3. Tape the paper to the stone.  Make sure that it is secure so that it won't slide as you are rubbing and cause a blurred image, and that it covers the face of the stone completely, so that you won't get marks on it.  
4. If only doing lunettes, please be sure that a large enough area is covered to protect the stone.
5. With your fingers, press the paper lightly against the stone.  This will cause the paper to indent into the carvings, resulting in a clearer image, with less rubbing medium accidentally transferring into "blank" areas.
6. Using rubbing wax, a large crayon, charcoal, or chalk, gently start to rub along the outside edges - creating a "frame" for your rubbing.  Using  long, even strokes following the same direction, fill in the "frame".
7. Rub lightly to start with, and then apply more pressure to darken in the design if it suits you. Be very careful and gentle.
8. If you used chalk for your rubbing, then carefully spray the paper with a chalk spray such as Krylon.  Be very careful not to get any on the tombstone. It is best to remove the paper from the stone and lay it flat on the ground in an area away from any stones before spraying.
9. When the rubbing is done, carefully remove it from the tombstone and trim the edges to suit your liking. Remove the tape from the paper, being careful not to tear the edges of the paper.

Projects: DIY Notepads by Dwayne Lively

To assuage my guilt over conspicuously consuming thousands of pieces of paper a year in my teaching job, I started stapling together the scrap sheets that still had one clean side and used them as notepads. I even would use an Xacto knife to perforate the tops and make them easier to tear off the pad. The notepads were excellent for rough drafts of tests and lesson plans, but they didn't suit my writing style. When I'm working on a piece of fiction or an article for a magazine, I find I write too large and use too much paper if I don't have lines to follow.

After finding a freeware graph paper program (see below) on the PricelessWare website (www.pricelesswarehome.org) a little trial and error and my old bubble jet printer helped me produce early prototypes of lined notepads.

I now have nearly 50 homemade pads of 50-65 pages each. Thanks to my new printer, an Epson 890, the system is down to a swift science:

The 'Hidden life' of Paper

Media companies have published numerous articles on global warming and greenhouse emissions in recent years. Now, a couple of large publishers are starting to think about their own impact on the environment.

Time Inc. took part in a study published this year by the Heinz Center that calculated the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced over the entire process of publishing Time and In Style.

"We've recognized that these are issues that are important to our readers and, increasingly, important to our advertisers," said David Refkin, director of sustainable development for Time Inc., a division of Time Warner, and a member of the board of the Heinz Center. "We're starting to see a movement where becoming carbon neutral is something many companies are considering."

Other magazine companies, including Hearst, now say they are studying the Heinz report to consider the implications for their magazines, and Rupert Murdoch recently announced that News Corp. was developing a plan to become entirely carbon neutral, meaning that the company would reduce its carbon emissions and try to offset the emissions left over.

Large-scale manufacturing is better known as a source of the greenhouse gases that many scientists say cause global warming. Electric power production accounts for about 40 percent of emissions in the United States and private motor vehicle use, for about 20 percent, said Michael Oppenheimer, a professor of geosciences at Princeton University.

David Sedaris' Europa Notebook

"For the past ten years or so, I’ve made it a habit to carry a small notebook in my front pocket. The model I favor is called the Europa, and I pull it out an average of ten times a day, jotting down grocery lists, observations, and little thoughts on how to make money, or torment people. The last page is always reserved for phone numbers, and the second to last I use for gift ideas. These are not things I might give to other people, but things that they might give to me: a shoehorn, for instance—always wanted one. The same goes for a pencil case, which, on the low end, probably costs no more than a doughnut.

I’ve also got ideas in the five-hundred-to-two-thousand-dollar range, though those tend to be more specific. This nineteenth-century portrait of a dog, for example. I’m not what you’d call a dog person, far from it, but this particular one—a whippet, I think—had alarmingly big nipples, huge, like bolts screwed halfway into her belly. More interesting was that she seemed aware of it. You could see it in her eyes as she turned to face the painter. “Oh, not now,” she appeared to be saying. “Have you no decency?”
