when i was 16/17

This was one of my first major notebooks I started near the beginning of high school. I wanted to start a "diary" but thought writing down everyday details would be boring. I was never good at drawing so I used acrylic paints and pictures I found for filling the pages. These two pages were done with purple acrylic paint and pictures taken from an art book I found at a thrift store. The writing is just sentences grouped together that would probably only make sense in my mind.

After I finished that notebook I moved on to just regular lined composite books to write down everything and anything. Since I am a huge over analzyer this has helped me in making sense of many different events. My collection of notebooks has grown to over 75 in just a few short years. Currently I am obsessed with writing everything down in my moleskine and will never stray from it. It comes with me wherever I go so I can record every little thought (it is kind of neurotic but it keeps me sane).

NaNoWriMo 2006 draws to a close

Though it seems impossible, NaNoWriMo 2006 is drawing to a close. Everyone who crosses the 50,000-word mark has until 11:59:59 PM local time to get their novel validated, and collect their winner's certificate and winner web icon. Validation also nets you a sweet purple winner bar, and places your name on our esteemed Winners Page. In the past, we've given everyone until 11:59:59 PM Pacific time to get their novel in to us, but this year Russ has figured out how to localize everything. So your time to validate your novel may be ending soon (I'm looking at you New Zealand). Also, at 11:59:59 PM local time, everyone's word counts and novel excerpts will be locked into the site forever. Be sure to update both before the clock chimes midnight on Thursday!

Sports anchor is a pen collector

BALTIMORE - Gerry Sandusky, the affable WBAL-TV 11 sports anchor and radio voice of the Ravens, is in his home position. That means he’s relaxed, laid back in his chair and, most definitely, with a pen in his hand.

Sandusky’s love affair with finer writing tools began when fellow anchor Rod Daniels, noting Gerry had recently bought a new rollerball pen, handed him a catalog from Levenger’s, a kind of Smarter Image for the bell, book, candle and pen set.

“I saw the fountain pens and liked them, bought my first one for something like $50, 10 or 15 years ago,” Sandusky said.

And so an education began.

To listen to Sandusky speak, it’s like learning a new language, with names like Aurora (“They make the best ink, it’s like cream”), Noodlers (“Their ink isn’t as good as Aurora’s, but they have a much greater variety of colors to choose from”), Visconti, Omas, Stipula, Watermark, Parker, Montblanc — now don’t get him started on Montblancs.

Maki-e lacquer Pens

The art of pen

The complex lacquering technique of maki-e has been practiced for many centuries in Japan, but it was only in the 1920s that it was first applied to a fountain pen.

Namiki Manufacturing, now Pilot Pen, pioneered the elaborately decorated instruments and for most of the last century the technique was used only by a few other Japanese companies, although Dunhill introduced the highly collectible handmade pens into Europe in the 1930s through a distribution deal with Namiki.

Recently, however, some new manufacturers have been muscling in on the maki-e market and, surprisingly, they are mainly American.

"This is a recent phenomenon we've noticed over the past five years. The competition is definitely increasing, " said Chris Reed, general manager for Europe and the United States at Sailor Pen, a Japanese manufacturer. "Maki-e decoration is now a popular trend, especially amongst American companies, which reflects consumer demand there."
