Kickstarter: The CoCoPen

Today is the last day to get a chance to be among the first to own this unique pen made out of a ombination of solid aluminum alloy and tropical coconut shell pen housing.

"It made out of solid aluminum alloy and natural coconut shell with CNC machining process and polished manually by a human hand. We put the tropical coconut shell on its barrel as a grip and on its cap to make it beautiful."

Slick machined steel with hint of the tropical. I love the contrast. With refills for the common Pilot G2 and Montblanc, this is truly a unique gift to friend or self.

Kickstarter: Kline Layered Sketchbooks and Journals

Exciting development over at Kickstarter where Kline is asking for support to make a sketchbook that features vellum, stock, and/or watercolor paper co-layered into a single hardbound cotton cover.

"KLINE is the first sketchbook or journal to offer co-layered pages in a single binding.  If your creativity needs translucent vellum, grid paper, watercolor sheets, or just alternating ruled and blank pages"

Their press release says Kline is also "the only sketchbook to feature a combined glue and ribbon reinforced page binding and theonly line of sketchbooks and journals to be made with renewable cotton."

As of this hour, the project has received $9,400 in pledges of the $15K they're asking for. With 39 days more to go, I think the goal is very much within reach for this ambitious range.

Stone Paper

I'm intrigued by this "stone paper" range of notebooks and journals called "Ogami" The official site says this kind of paper is derived from calcium carbonate, using "a simple process involving water and non-toxic resins to create a revolutionary material."

The mineral is undoubtably abundant and "tree-free" which appeals to many of us. Bonus points for being bleach-free, waterproof and recyclable.

I hope to meet this product in the future.

Kishi Machiko alerted us to the availability of nuuna notebooks from Japan.

"Linen-covered and hardback". Keywords that beckon to the affcionado. I was sent a sample of an similar notebook in the early days of Notebookism. It just sat on my desk like a touchstone - too pretty to even write on.

Moleskine in the Digital Age

NPR's Marketplace featured Moleskine the other day as the company goes public.

"What's the future of a paper company in the digital age? For Italian notebook maker Moleskine, it's bright enough to raise $300 million from investors. Moleskine has built a profitable niche-selling notebooks modeled on the ones used by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway. But once the company's stock begins trading publicly on Wednesday, Moleskine will have to keep growing to keep shareholders happy. It has a plan."

Stainless Steel Sharpie

Recently making its appearance is this sleek marker from Sharpie, refillable and fine-tipped. Will probably bleed through most notebook pages but great for doodling on covers and anything writable that happens to be around it. Laser-etched logo, too! Pew! pew! pew!

Letterpress and Notebooks

Uploaded a while back, this video from Field Notes gives us a peek at how their notebooks are made. Having been around letterpress machines as a kid, this short documentary really took me back in time.
