"What do Harry Potter, Thomas the Tank Engine,
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Black Beauty have in common? Their stories
are set in England, as are those of Mary Poppins, Paddington Bear and
Peter Pan.
Hoping to lure more young visitors
to Britain, the National Tourist Office recently capitalized on this
children's literary heritage (and let's be honest, the subsequent movie
adaptations) and put together an interactive Web map of hundreds of
story locations.
They range from Platform 9¾
in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (at King's
Cross Station, complete with a trolley disappearing into a brick wall)
to the real "Secret Garden," at Great Maytham Hall, immortalized in
Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel.
The map,
which can be downloaded at www.storybookengland.com, is filled with
educational information and links relating to more than 40 famous
children's stories set in Britain..."
